Tendonitis

Tendonitis refers to a common and potentially painful condition that is characterized by tendon inflammation. According to Dr. Binh Nguyen and the team of professionals at Cedar Chiropractic & Sports in Hopkinton, MA, tendonitis can affect any tendon, but most often in areas that experience repetitive stress – e.g. shoulders, elbows, wrists, and knees.

What is Tendonitis?

Tendons are the thick, fibrous cords that attach bones to muscles. Tendon inflammation, which occurs when tendons or their protective sheaths are injured, can lead to various symptoms that change depending on the severity and the exact location.

Tendonitis Symptoms

The most common symptom of tendonitis is pain at the site and nearby areas. This discomfort typically intensifies when the affected area is moved. Other symptoms may include –

  • Swelling.
  • Sensitivity when touched.
  • Stiffness to the affected area, especially in the morning or long stretches of non-movement.
  • A crunchy feeling/sound (a.k.a. crepitus) when moving the tendon.

The affected area might sometimes show signs of redness or warmth when touched because blood flow increases as the body seeks to heal the inflamed tissue.

Causes of Tendonitis

Tendonitis can impact any tendon; however, its causes will vary and be contingent on the location and the activities related to the inflammation.

  • Age - As a natural progression of the aging process, tendons become less flexible and more prone to injury. This is especially true for those over the age of 40.
  • Repetitive Motion - Repetitive motion is among the leading causes of strain and inflammation of a tendon.
  • Injury/Sudden Increase in Activity - A sudden increase in the frequency/intensity of physical activity can strain the tendons.
  • Poor Posture - Poor posture during activities (or incorrect technique when participating in sports) can put unnecessary stress/strain on tendons.
  • Arthritis - Other Medical Conditions -
    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Diabetes
    • Reactions to medications may contribute to tendonitis development.

In addition, external factors like ill-fitting shoes for runners can lead to tendonitis in the feet or legs.

Chiropractic Care for Tendonitis

Chiropractic and its complementary techniques offer a multifaceted approach to the treatment of tendonitis. These various techniques are often effective in targeting and meeting the specific needs of the condition.

  • Spinal Adjustments.
  • Cold Laser Therapy.
  • Soft Tissue Therapies.
  • The Graston Technique, to name a few.

If left untreated, tendonitis has the potential to become chronic, leading to further complications like rupturing.
